According to Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz, McLaren appeared to ‘spook themselves’ while testing the MCL35M in Bahrain.
The McLaren MCL35M received praise across the recent three days of pre-season testing in Bahrain. With multiple sources, from media to drivers, commentating on just how well the car looked out on the track.
Building on a fairly successful design from 2020, the MCL35M showed little trouble in navigating its away around the Bahrain International Circuit. With new arrival Daniel Riccardo setting the benchmark on day one and two.
But while the MCL35M seems to have passed with flying colours, the team has somewhat downplayed just how good the car might be. Something that didn’t go unnoticed from Sky Sports F1’s reporter Ted Kravitz, during a recent podcast with In the Fast Lane.
“It was weird at the test actually, McLaren, they had a very good day one in the dusty conditions and then they had a good day two,” Kravitz said. “And then they went all sort of coy and they thought, ‘Oh my goodness, we better not show everything’.
“It’s like they were scared. They spooked themselves and they didn’t want to give anything away so they stopped setting quick times to put everybody off the scent. But they were very happy.
“That was them saying globally, everything is looking optimal in the new McLaren. There are going to be some doubts about whether they will be even faster than the factory Mercedes team as well. Some people have got McLaren in second behind Red Bull.”
Whether or not McLaren do in fact have the second fastest car on the grid is something we will find out very shortly. With race one of the Formula 1 season kicking off in Bahrain this weekend. However, while Mercedes did experience a somewhat sketchy pre-season test, would it really be a surprise if they locked out the front row in Bahrain?
